Bar Lunch: May 15, 2009, and miscellaneous notes

Dear Bar Members,

It is with sadness that we recognize a loss to the community. Mr. Frank Platt passed away last week. We offer our sympathy and condolances to the family and the members of his firm. The family will make any announcements related to his passing.

Please accept apologies for no prior notice regarding the bar lunch on Friday (you will likely see this Friday morning). We do not have any specific program. Since there was no prior notice, no one had the opportunity to confirm. As a result, I look forward to seeing those who come to lunch and anticipate ordering off the menu rather than the family style service.

You should have all heard by now that we will welcome Christopher J. Riffle to our community. Christopher Riffle is the new associate at Platt Irwin. The Firm has extended an invitation to the bar to witness Judge S. Brooke Taylor administer the oath of attorney on May 18, 2009, at 3:00 pm at the Clallam County Superior Court. Please mark your calendar to attend this swearing in. Platt Irwin will also host a reception at their offices following the swearing in and invited all attorneys and staff. It is important for us to mark and attend events like this – and celebrate with our new legal community member.

The scholarship people met tonight and selected three well qualified students as our candidates this year. I extend my personal appreciation and thanks to Tracey Lassus and Curry Andrews for their participation as well as their unique insight! We selected Dain Steenberg, Rexx Ingalls and Isaac Boekelheide as recipients. Each of them displayed a uniqueness that was clear at a glance, demonstrated academic accomplishment and a focused goal. Patrick Irwin should enjoy the opportunity to make the awards to these young men.

On the topic of CLE’s, I want to let all of you know that we now must provide the evaluation forms at every program we offer. I will ensure those are provided for your use. They are maintained for two years along with the printed materials from each speaker. Printed materials are the standard for a CLE, explanations must be provided to the Bar for CLE’s which do not have printed material. Based on the agreement with the WSBA, CLE’s must always have a connection to the Pro Bono lawyers that are the target audience of these programs. If you are providing a CLE in the upcoming months, please be sure to let me know what connection your program has to Pro Bono and what materials you will provide. As an example, a program about DUI’s gives information to attorneys aiding families in dissolutions that may not be readily known to a family attorney but have a signfiicant impact on family dynamics.

Please contact me if you have any other business or comments to share.

Thank you for your attention.

Carol L. Mortensen
2009 President

Bar lunch: 4/3/09

Dear Bar Members:

The bar lunch on April 3, 2009, does not have a scheduled speaker and will instead focus around the topic of the scholarship notebooks for this year. Due to the lack of a speaker, the only fee associated with this meeting, is the cost of the food.

Date: April 3, 2009, at noon
Place: Soho Asian Bistro (134 W. Front Street)
Lunch is $13.00 (which includes tip)

Carol Mortensen, President

Bar Lunch: 3/20/09, CLE, The First 30 Words

Dear Bar Members:

Our next meeting is March 20, 2009, at noon. We meet at Soho Asian Bistro where the lunch is $13.00 (which includes tip). Please confirm your attendance by Friday, 3/13/09, if at all possible so we can advise Soho of the number of expected attendees.

We are having a CLE on 3/20/09 with an expectation of some kind of nifty electronics (The First 30 Words by R. Craig Smith). Please make best efforts to plan on being present.

The following issues were discussed on March 6, 2009:

Law Tech Letter: Kathleen McCormick will be drafting a letter for review. Once in draft form, it will be circulated through the Bar email for review, revision & responses. We have a deadline for presentation to the Supreme Court so that will be included.

Yellow Pages: The yellow pages issue will not be pursued further.

Scholarship Notebooks: We will either obtain information from Sequim Schools or turn to PA Schools if they do not respond. The plan is to give at the same level and number as last year.

Training Proposals: Please feel free to volunteer yourself or others.

Law Day: We are checking into possible locations. Sal Mungia will speak. Expect more details shortly.

Thanks,
Carol M.

Bar Lunch: 3/6/09

Dear Bar Members:

Our next meeting is:
March 6, 2009, at Noon
Soho Asian Bistro (134 W. Front Street)
Lunch is $13.00 – which includes the tip
Please RSVP by 2/27/09 so I can provide Soho with a tentative head count.

We had 22 people at Ingrid Larson-Alexander’s presentation – thanks to all who came. CLE credit remains pending for both programs.

Our next meeting will involve several important topics so I encourage you all to attend. Our tentative agenda will include Law Day (Sal Mungia will attend!); a Family Law section report (hopefully); scholarship notebooks; yellow pages; and so on. We also have a couple of requests for presentations on collections & post-judgment collections and water law. If you know someone or are someone who would like to present – let me know.

Thank you all for your great efforts in confirming and I will look forward to seeing you March 6th!

Carol L. Mortensen

Bar Lunch: 2/6/09, CLE on Family Law, please confirm

Dear Fellow Bar Members:

Thank you to the 15 people who confirmed (and appeared) at the last bar lunch! Great going!

Please confirm your attendance at the next meeting by January 30th so I can provide the number to Soho.

Our next meeting is February 6, 2009, at noon at Soho. Teresa Neudorfer will be presenting a CLE regarding the law tech issue and on recent developments in the family law area. Our local bar will then be able to send a letter to the Supreme Court on our position. Please feel free to volunteer if you would like to participate in writing the letter for consideration by our bar. Lacking volunteers, a committee will be appointed.

The Family Law Section of our local bar will have it’s first meeting of 2009 on February 13th. Among the likely topics is our local approach to settlement conferences and trials. While everyone is welcome – we are hoping that a good showing of the family law attorneys will attend. The meeting will be at noon and tentatively at Cafe Garden. Please look for the formal notice in the next two weeks.

If you know anyone who is NOT on our email list or NOT a member of our local bar – let me know. We want to be as inclusive as possible – and ensure everyone pays Cliff Tassie their dues if for no other reason than to get his annual dunning letters!
I am looking for people interested in sharing their knowledge with us through a CLE. As always, it benefits Pro Bono and at $20 per credit, a darn cheap CLE.

I am looking forward to seeing you at our next lunch -
Carol Mortensen

As a reminder, the lunch at Soho is $13.00 (includes tip). We are collecting the payment for everyone to facilitate getting payments made. If you need receipts, please let us know. If paying by debit or credit card, you will need to pay separately.
