www.avvo.com is a new, free, yellow page type referral and rating service. Based in Seattle, Avvo opened shop this year. You can check your own name to make sure information is accurate and add a few details about your practice. The service is free to lawyers and people looking for lawyers. How do they do it? Avvo makes money from selling rating independent advertising.
There are many internet sites hoping to make a buck, but it doesn’t seem like there is much lose and they do have a fairly comprehensive list of attorneys, so I recommend you check your own information and add any details you like.
Because their attorney list seemed so comprehensive, I asked Avvo how they get their information. “Avvo collects lawyer information from several public sources. We start with information from the state bar, which can be provided to us in a variety of ways, including CD or the state bar web site. Then, if a lawyer has a web site that we are aware of, we will add profile information published on that web site. Finally, lawyers can “claim” their profiles for free and update their profile with as much information as they want, as often as they want.”
Avvo also wanted to emphasize:
“To help lawyers in Washington State reach more potential consumer clients online, Avvo also added “Avvo Answers,” a free legal questions-and-answers forum that allows lawyers to answer legal questions posted by consumers facing legal issues. It also added “Track Record,” a free, easy way for lawyers to post, showcase and discuss their best cases and matters via their
Avvo Profiles. Here’s a sample:
