Mr. Dulin and Ms. Rickerson will present vital information on: typical situations in which concussions occur, including sports, auto, home and work-place accidents, battered wives and children; the nature of concussions; typical signs and symptoms to watch for; the importance of proper diagnosis and management; current diagnostic tools; medical treatment both short and long term; lifelong consequences; recent studies of sub-concussive injuries and their importance; cognitive impact and resolution; autopsy results from professional athletes with brain damage known as chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE); behavioral changes due to concussion; adolescents and adults heal differently; status of the law in Washington; brief review of updates in law in other states; active organizations addressing the issues; experts in the field; liability issues; failure to do due diligence; research and development in sports equipment and auto safety; why it takes a community to manage concussions in student-athletes.
