Eddie Beck, court reporter: In memoriam 2021

August 27, 2021

Beloved Clallam County court reporter Edith “Eddie” Beck has passed away. Eddie was born in 1937 in Vallejo, California. After a divorce, Eddie took night classes to become a court reporter.

She took a job (her first?) working judge Tyler Moffett in the Clallam County Superior Court. She continued to work as the court reporter for Judges Grant Meiner and George Wood in Courtroom 1. After retiring from her service with the Superior Court, Eddie worked as a private stenographer for many lawyers on the North Olympic Peninsula.

Eddie contributed to her community in many ways. She was a member of the Clallam County Jet Set Soroptomist club, hosted foreign students attending Peninsula College, and tirelessly supporting our local Duck Derby. She was well known for generously hosting people at her warm home.

Eddie is survived by three children and, so far, three grandchildren. Eddie survived her long term partner Stanley Feldman.

Eddie was Judge Meiner’s reporter and present when he administered my oath of attorney in 1989. I’ve known few people as professional and kind as Eddie Beck. In the many, many cases where Eddie was my stenographer, she never once, even in cases involving difficult human behavior, raised an eyebrow or uttered a judgmental or unkind word. I’d say she was one of the people who helped teach me the meaning of grace.

Dennis Dickson J.D.: In memoriam 2021

June 9, 2021

Long time Clallam County lawyer Dennis Dickson passed away on May 21, 2021. Dennis was 75. He practiced most of his career as a city attorney for Port Angeles. He was known for his dedication to protecting the Port Angeles community, hard work, compassion, fair treatment of everyone in the legal system, and for being a lawyer others could look to for inspiration. He was never dogmatic and always looked for the facts and the unique aspect of what made each and every case unique.

In 2007, Dennis made a decision not to charge a 20 year-old woman who hit and killed another woman with her vehicle. He looked at the facts carefully and nonjudgmentally, and found there was no evidence of speeding, negligence or reckless driving. He found the incident was an accident, and the family of the deceased woman agreed. “When we get into situations like this, we certainly have to recognize there are things that are unfortunate accidents that don’t involve criminal behavior.” Peninsula Daily News, September 25, 2007.

Dennis Dickson, Port Angeles City Attorney

Dennis was born in 1946. He graduated from law school in Ohio and practiced for several years in Toledo. He was admitted to practice law in Washington on May 31, 1988, and served the Port Angeles City Attorney’s office for 22 years, retiring in 2010.

Dennis contributed greatly to community causes. He served on the board or in an active position for Peninsula Behavioral Health, Dungeness River Audubon Center, North Olympic Land Trust, Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society, Naval Elks #353, and Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.

Harry Jackson J.D.: In memoriam 2018

August 17, 2018

Harry Jackson passed away on August 15, 2019, at the age of 87, at Olympic Medical Center with family and friends by his side. Harry was an attorney loved by everyone who knew him. Harry “retired” to Clallam County in 1990, when he was 60, after practicing law in California and Ohio, but he never actually retired from the practice of law. Harry was one of the most prolific volunteers at the Clallam-Jefferson Pro Bono Lawyers office, and served on their board of directors in the early years the pro bono agency was being developed. Harry represented young people through 2018.

Harry was single when he moved to Clallam County. He moved back to California for a short while where he met his future wife Maria Luisa. The two moved back to their Freshwater Bay home outside of Port Angeles, and were inseparable until Maria Luisa’s death several years ago.

“He was helpful and welcoming and shared his insights with me as “a new lawyer in Port Angeles” (at the age of about 60!). I’ll always have a fond place in my heart for Harry Jackson. I know he touched many lives.” Deborah Nelson

“Harry was the kind of person we all should strive to be. He cared and acted always out of that caring. Our community will be less without him being in it but is far better because he was. Rest In Peace Harry, yours was a life well lived.” Janet and Ken Williams

“Harry came to Port Angeles when I opened my private practice. He was a marvelous and generous mentor to me, always available for any question no matter how complicated. He always had good legal advice and a humane perspective. His compassion for people in need of help was an early inspiration for me.” Mark Baumann

“Harry was the most beautiful man. He and Maria Luisa recognized me as a survivor of a violent crime and made an effort to get through those walls. That sort of kindness and compassion, I had never experienced before or since. He will be greatly missed.” Pam Lindquist

“Such a gentle, intelligent, loving man who always shared a kind word. Wow, Harry, you will be so missed!” Lane Wolfley

Tony Mauhar, J.D.: In memoriam 2018

May 16, 2018

Anthony Philip Mauhar, Jr., died on May 14, 2018, at the age of 68 after he fell from his boat  in the Port Townsend Boat Haven and drowned. Tony was a respected attorney, beloved by his clients, who practiced in Clallam and Jefferson Counties.

“Tony Mauhar was an excellent attorney and a great example to me. He death announcement here comes as a shock to me. He was a good-humored fellow and easy to work with. He sought to avoid conflict but argued persuasively in court when he had to. He willingly gave me advice on how to be a better attorney. I am touched by his loss and will miss him.” Joseph Wolfley

“Oh such sad news. Tony Mauhar was one of my first friends when I started practicing law in Port Angeles in 1994. He was always helpful and kind and had a great sense of humor. Over the years, he became a friend and I was happy when he return to the North Olympic Peninsula after being in Olympia for a bit. I am just devastated by his loss. He was a fine lawyer and an even better person. He will be missed.” Deborah Nelson

“Tony was always quick with a smile and pleasure to work with. It’s big loss for our community and his clients.” Mark Baumann

Judge Richard Headrick: in Memoriam 2011

December 20, 2011

Judge Headrick passed away December 7, 2011 at age 74. He honored the Clallam County District Court #1 Bench over four terms from 1979 through 1993. Judge Headrick represented the finest qualities of a judge. He was fair, impartial, diligent, balanced and compassionate. He worked hard and brought a fine legal mind as he considered all sides of an argument.

Above all, Judge Headrick was, as Craig Ritchie said, unflappable. He demonstrated an unusual amount of patience and politeness. For practitioners, this is often one of the most appreciated aspects of a judge.

A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 7, 2012, in the Juan de Fuca Room at the Port Angeles Crabhouse restaurant, 221 North Lincoln Street, Port Angeles, Washington.

If you would like to offer a thought or memory about Rich, please forward your thoughts and we will post them.

A very nice Memorial Notice may found here at the Peninsula Daily News website.
