This is a reminder that the Clallam County Bar Association is hosting a CLE Luncheon at the North Olympic Peninsula Skills Center this Friday, March 29, at noon*.
The third CLE for 2013 will be Mrs. Anne DeVoe’s presentation on Federal Indian Law. A fascinating topic useful to every Clallam attorney since we are in such close proximity to the Makah. It will begin with a short background in the field of federal Indian law, including a summary of the different eras: treaties, removal, termination, and self-determination. Next, it will provide a brief exploration of the complexities of criminal jurisdiction in Indian country (Major Crimes Act), and a discussion of Public Law 280, including the March, 2012 legislation in Washington State that allows the state to retrocede its jurisdiction under PL 280. Finally, there will be an overview of the current trend of the Supreme Court, and then a discussion of the implications and the importance for attorneys to help strengthen tribal sovereignty by making the choice to use tribal courts.
Payment for the CLE is voluntary. We ask, however, that you make a $20 donation payable to “Pro Bono Lawyers.”
Lunch is $9.50, payable to “Skills Center.”
