Putting Kids First Parenting Class

November 7, 2012

Putting Kids First has been presenting the Parenting and Co-Parenting
classes for almost twenty years in English. We are proud to now offer the
Spanish version to those who need a translated version of the most helpful
parenting class online.

Finding and attending a parenting class can often be difficult and we
found an increasing demand for Spanish speaking parents who could not find
classes in Spanish in their area. Having it online in Spanish is just
another way Putting Kids First is trying to help families.

Putting Kids First is dedicated to helping attorneys and courts to receive
a copy of a participants certificate of completion with the email and fax
request filled out by clients, when they complete the class. Two
originals are still mailed out through The United States Postal Service.
The immediate emailing or faxing of certificates can be beneficial for
those, that need a certificate for a fast approaching court date.

If so, on November 15, 2012 at 10:00 a.m., Clallam County Superior Court will open its doors to finalize adoptions in Clallam County as part of National Adoption Day. This one day celebrates the joys of adoption and encourages more people to create or grow families through adoption. Every year more than 4,000 adoptions are finalized as part of National Adoption Day, and communities host events to celebrate families formed through adoption. It is also a day to draw attention to the nearly 30,000 children who turn 18 without having forever families.
There also will be activities to celebrate families who adopt and provide information to prospective parents about the adoption process. From November 12 – 16, there will be a public display at the Clallam County Courthouse which will provide information regarding foster care and adoption in the State of Washington.

Military Divorce Pension Division CLE

August 15, 2012

I am pleased to announce that I will be speaking in an upcoming Strafford live phone/web seminar, “Military Divorce: Dividing Military Retirement Benefits” scheduled for Thursday, September 13, 1:00pm-2:30pm EDT.
Military retirement benefits often represent the most valuable asset in a military marital estate. Division of military pensions presents complex challenges due to unique rules that govern military retirement pay, applicable federal laws and procedures, and jurisdictional issues.
Identifying the appropriate methods of division for an active duty service member’s pension is essential. Counsel must anticipate issues involving a retiree’s ability to thwart pension division by election of disability benefits and utilize remedial measures through an indemnification clause.
Understanding the costs, benefits and implementation of the Survivor Benefit Plan, the survivor annuity in the event the service member predeceases the former spouse, is also critical. Practitioners must know the deadlines for application, selection of the base amount, and who will pay the premiums.
My fellow panelists and I will prepare family law counsel to identify the important issues that arise in dividing military pensions, such as navigating applicable federal laws and procedures, dealing with jurisdictional issues, choosing methods of pension division, and allocating the Survivor Benefit Plan.
We will offer our perspectives and guidance on these and other critical questions:
What rules govern the division of military retired pay and where can they be found?
What are the methods of division for an active duty service member’s pension?
How can the division of a military pension be thwarted by a military retiree’s election and how can this be remedied?
What are the rules for securing Survivor Benefit Plan coverage?
After our presentations, we will engage in a live question and answer session with participants — so we can answer your questions about these important issues directly.
I hope you’ll join us.
