Giving is good: Project Homeless Connect 2013
Giving is good. It releases endorphin, makes us feel better, helps us overcome the stresses of our profession, and strengthens the neural networks in our brains that relate to flexible thinking, emotion regulation, empathy, and more. Project Homeless Connect (PHC) is a wonderful opportunity for giving. PHC is a joint project by Serenity House and Clallam County Health and Human Services. The Clallam County Pro Bono Lawyers will host a booth with private consultation areas.
You may be wondering, “how can a lawyer help homeless people?” These folks generally don’t need extensive legal advice. Often what is more important for them is that they have an opportunity to be heard by a professional that cares. Many homeless people have unresolved loss and trauma. Research now tells us that loss and trauma are far more damaging if they are unresolved. This leads to impediments to the various regions of the brain achieving an integrated status. Things like problem solving and engaging in healthy relationships are difficult if not impossible to achieve when the brain is unintegrated.
For sure, some people at PHC need legal triage, have specific questions and/or need direction to further services. But most simply need someone to listen to them, someone to hear their story, and let them know they are not crazy in their perception that the system can be difficult. The most important things a lawyer can provide is an act of empathy and an act of respect for the client’s feelings. These small acts can go a long way for PHC client’s in their struggles with feelings of helplessness.
Even if you don’t know anything about landlord-tenant, mortgage, family, disability, employment, criminal, entitlement law, or about mediation or courtroom procedures, you can make a valuable contribution listening and/or screening.
In previous years, people seeking services at the event exceeded 300. For those of you who may need to print out documents a printer will be provided and online forms will be available. Attached is an Advice and Consult Agreement that may be used so you can clearly limit your consultation to the event. Why Neuroscience matters for counseling professionals – hosted webinars
Mark Baumann and Rachel Hardies will host free 1 hour webcast re-broadcasts of this new Psychotherapy Networker series, each Wednesday evening from 5:15-6:30, from January 23-February 27, 2013, in the fireplace room at Mark’s law office.
Speakers include Dan Siegel, Steven Porges, Norman Doidge, Rick Hanson, Louann Brizendine, and Michael Gelb. Discussion will follow afterwards for anyone interested.
Neuroscience offers great insight into conflict management. These seminars, interviews with leading professionals in the field of counseling, provide practical client counseling solutions based on brain research.

Message from Incoming 2013 Bar President Derek Medina
It is my pleasure to assume the position of President of the Clallam County Bar Association. I look forward to another year of stimulating CLE courses and networking opportunities. I hope that these event can assist in elevating not only professional competence, but also courtesy and integrity of our legal fraternity.
I would like to thank our immediate Past President, Simon Barnhart, for his leadership, diligence, and wisdom. Simon will continue to be a key adviser and resource to the Bar Association during this year. I would also like to thank the members of the bar for allowing me to be your president.
As has been the custom, I will continue to send emails to alert the membership about upcoming social lunches, CLE and other events.

Please join us at the Jefferson County Superior Court located at 1820 Jefferson Street, Port Townsend, WA on Friday, January 11, 2013 @ 3:00 p.m. for Judge Elect Keith Harper’s swearing in ceremony. Take this opportunity to greet our new judge and to wish Judge Craddock D. Verser well as his 8 year term officially ends on January 13, 2013 with Judge Harper taking the bench January 14, 2013. There will be light hors d’oeuvres and refreshments served with plenty of time to meet and greet all that are in attendance.
